Subject Content
The Learning Support Department offers a variety of additional support to all pupils who have identified Special Educational Needs (SEN) in line with the SEN Code of Practice.
The school aims to meet the majority of pupils' additional needs through school action. However, some pupils may also require external support, their needs will be met through school action plus. A small minority may require a statement of Special Educational Needs.
All teachers are informed of pupils' reading ages and national curriculum levels of attainment in literacy and numeracy. Additional advice sheets are provided for some pupils detailing specific needs, and strategies to be used to support curriculum access. Some pupils will be given specific targets to improve through Group Educational Plans or Individual Educational Plans (IEPs).
Assessment
Pupil progress is regularly assessed; at least every six months for pupils on the register of Special Educational Needs at SA and SA+ and termly for those pupils who have a statement of SEN. Additional assessments for Special Arrangements in SATs or GCSE will be carried out.
Teaching Group Arrangements
Pupils are mainly supported by Teaching Assistants in curriculum areas. Depending on need, the assistants provide in class or one to one support as appropriate. Withdrawal from lessons when necessary is always for a time limited period. It is always well organised to minimise disruption to curriculum entitlement.
Extra Curricular Activities
Home tutoring 'Basics of Success', is available where appropriate for all pupils at Key stage 3.
