Welcome to Harris Church of England Academy

Harris Church of England Academy is a school moving forward. As the new headteacher I feel privileged to be the leader of this potentially outstanding school. It was the ethos and commitment to achieving excellence at all levels of the school that impressed me and drove me to apply to become the headteacher at Harris Church of England Academy.

date posted: Wednesday 22 Oct 2014

Keen to promote road safety and provide new opportunities for students, the friends of Harris Academy have again provided an opportunity for Harris students to test their driving skills.

Rugby Roadies supplied the cars and instructors and Harris Academy supplied some very enthusiastic young drivers. As a first taste of driving a road legal car, the students were eager to get started some of their comments included “Best day ever” and “can’t wait for next time” Parents watching from the sidelines felt that the experience could only help their children’s confidence and self-esteem. All of them did so well and obviously enjoyed every minute, they all left with a huge smile.” Another parent commented it was a fantastic experience for the children so much fun and a confidence boost”.

Thanks to Rugby Roadies for giving the students a day to remember and also the Friends of Harris for planning such an enjoyable day.

Friends of Harris would also like to thank Head teacher, Michael Stoppard and the site staff for opening the school grounds to this event.

With this event we managed to raised £90 for the Friends of Harris fund.

To raise money for learning resources, the Friends of Harris (our PTA) have organised an exciting opportunity for students in Years 7 and 8.

In conjunction with local driving schools, we are offering students their first taste of driving a car. The 30 minute sessions, run by fully qualified instructors in dual controlled vehicles, will take place on the school site between 9am and 4pm on Saturday October 18th, 2014.

Details of the event and how to book a place can be found on the Letters Home page of our website. Places will be allocated on a ‘first-come, first-served’ basis and only one session per child can be booked. Students in receipt of Pupil Premium funding can have their session paid for through the school if they are successful in securing a place.

If you are happy for your child to participate, please complete and sign the form Letters Home page of our website and return it to school as soon as possible. Cheques should be made payable to Harris Church of England Academy.

With best wishes and thanks for your continued support,

    • Pupils get a tiny glimpse into the future.

date posted: Tuesday 30 Sep 2014

Pupils at Harris Church of England Academy in Rugby had a look at the future of housing last Thursday when Tiny House UK brought their latest tiny house into the school for the students to see.
The Key Stage 3 pupils are in the middle of a Design and Technology Product Design project in which they are designing their own tiny house.
Product Design Subject Leader at Harris Academy Mr Fran Martin set the project partly to show the students an alternative to the current property market.
“With the average age of first time buyers being 36 and the average deposit being £31,000 this shows the students that there is a possible alternative and they can escape costly mortgages or high rents, reduce their living expenses and live in a more environmentally friendly way.”
“The students have been really enthusiastic about the challenge of designing a liveable tiny home with space-saving transformable furniture and are looking forward to working on their final scale models.”
The tiny house movement, which originated in the USA, is now gaining popularity in the UK helped by TV programmes like George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces and George recently helped spread the word on twitter when he retweeted Mr Martin’s tweet about the school visit to his 67 thousand followers.
Mark Burton from Tiny House UK says “I’d like to see some land set aside to set up a village of tiny homes. You often have elderly people living together in mobile homes - why not have younger people doing the same, but in these? Or they can be used for glamping accommodation, student housing or even for extended families.”

    • Harris Celebrates GCSE Exam Results

date posted: Thursday 28 Aug 2014

As the pressure to achieve excellent exam results increases nationally, I am pleased that Harris Church of England Academy is able to celebrate another year of improving examination results. We are pleased that 98.9% of our students passed GCSE with 55% of our students achieving the gold standard of 5 A*-C GCSEs including English and mathematics, this is a 16% improvement over the last two years. In addition it is pleasing to note that English and mathematics performed above national average in achieving A*-C GCSE grades.

The results as always are a reflection of the partnership between students, parents/carers and staff. I would like to take this opportunity to praise and congratulate all of those involved in ensuring that the students at Harris Church of England Academy are now able to move on to the next step in their future with GCSE success behind them.
